Microsoft Teams

What is MS Teams?

Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) is a complementary tool to the Virtual Campus (Brightspace), which is the cornerstone of the University of Ottawa's Learning Technology Ecosystem. It will allow you to have regular synchronous meetings with your students, facilitate group work and collaborative learning using Channels.

With MS Teams, you can share screens, and resources, interact by voice or text chats and enable group discussions using breakout rooms. MS Teams comes with a collaborative interface that can be used during a live lecture for group work or to administer question polls using channels. Students' lists are automatically synchronized to MS Teams space.

Instructors can request space for each course in MS Teams account for free using Maestro!

Important

If you are recording your course in a teaching space on campus, please read the Guidelines for media recording of students in learning spaces.

You can also use the Notice of Collection of Personal Information we prepared. You must add one or both notices to your syllabus or notify your students beforehand.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

An important thing is to set a welcoming tone in your online course, by welcoming students when they enter a live session, giving them a chance to introduce themselves to their classmates (e.g. using the chat room or the microphone).

Screen sharing options

When selecting Desktop, you are sharing your entire computer screen. Viewers will be able to see everything you do on your computer, if you open a PowerPoint or access a webpage, and switch back and forth between programs. Everything you see on your screen, viewers will be able to see.

Note: for Mac users, you will first need to grant permission to share your screen from the System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Make sure to select MS Teams under Screen Recording
