Certificate in university teaching
The TLSS team is pleased to launch a revised and improved version of its Certificate in University Teaching for faculty members.
Would you like to review the organization or format of your courses? Are you looking for innovative, inclusive teaching strategies that are better suited to your students' needs and the complex realities of the 21st century? Would you like to explore new ways of teaching or use technology in your teaching? Would you like to participate in an inspiring professional development experience with colleagues in a community of practice setting? Then our certificate program is for you!
We are proposing a three-stage training program.
Program structure

Foundations
An essential first stage that will enable you to consolidate the basics of course design and teaching in a university context.
In a cohort format, we are offering you a rich learning environment where you can exchange ideas with colleagues and benefit from the advice of a team of specialists in the field of university teaching.
Format
- Face-to-face on the University of Ottawa campus
- Six 3-hour sessions normally spread over a six-week period
- Cohort limited to 20 participants
Acknowledgement
At the end of this first stage, you will receive a document acknowledging your completion of the Foundations, which will enable you to highlight this training in your teaching dossier.
Visit this page regularly for updates on the next cohort.

Pillars
This second stage will provide an opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the themes you explored during the Foundations. It is based on an intensive format where you will (re)design an instructional practice of your choosing.
In a three-day intensive format, you will (re)design an instructional practice with the goal of integrating it into your own teaching, while receiving feedback and support from colleagues and TLSS specialists. Instructional practices may include, but are not limited to, (re)designing an activity or assessment task, integrating an educational technology, or developing a facilitation technique.
Format for the fall term
- Pre-session virtual meeting: during the first week of October
- Three-days in-person session on campus during the fall reading week
- Optional follow-up meeting
- Cohort limited to 20 participants
Format for the winter term
- Pre-session virtual meeting: during the last week of January
- Three-days in-person session on campus during the winter reading week
- Optional follow-up meeting
- Cohort limited to 20 participants
Acknowledgement
At the end of this second stage, you will receive another document acknowledging that you have completed the Pillars, which will enable you to highlight this training in your teaching dossier.
Important – In order to register for the Pillars stage, you must have completed the Foundations stage.

Capstone project
This third stage will enable you to complete your training by implementing a personal and significant project that will have an impact on your teaching.
In a self-directed format, you will benefit from personalized support from the TLSS specialists, who will guide you in the completion of your chosen capstone project.
Format
- Self-directed
- Work to be carried out independently according to your personal schedule with the support of TLSS specialists
- Meetings and support based on your needs
- Completion during one of the university terms (fall, winter or spring/summer)
Acknowledgement
At the end of this final stage, you will receive your certificate, which will enable you to highlight your training in university teaching. An official ceremony will be held to celebrate your achievement.
