Advancing Disability Rights

Special activity presented by the Office of the Vice-Provost EDI

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15% of the global population lives with a disability. But what does this number truly represent, and who are the people behind it? The Disability Data Initiative offers valuable insights into the diverse living and working conditions of persons with disabilities across countries and contexts.

How are Canadian universities, and the University of Ottawa in particular, working to enhance accessibility and promote excellence for students, faculty and staff with disabilities? Join us for an engaging event featuring presentations by international experts, along with reflections from uOttawa colleagues who are leading efforts to advance accessibility and inclusion on our campus.

Main speakers:

Sophie Mitra is a professor of economics at Fordham University, in New York City, and founder of the Disability Data Initiative

Deborah Stienstra holds the Jarislowsky Chair in Families and Work at the University of Guelph, where she also directs the Live Work Well Research Centre.

Other panellists:

Awad Ibrahim is a full professor; the vice-provost of equity, diversity and inclusive excellence; and the holder of the Air Canada Professorship on Anti-Racism.

Marie-Claude Gagnon is manager of accessibility at the Human Rights Office. She works on strategic initiatives in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

Christine Gibb is an associate professor at the uOttawa School of International Development and Global Studies. Last fall, her undergraduate research methods class studied disability and accessibility issues and services on campus.

Stephen Baranyi is a full professor at the uOttawa School of International Development and Global Studies. He also co-ordinates the EDID-GHDI partnership in Haiti.
