Course Design – Important Things to Consider

Designing a university course is a complex task involving the interplay of many essential elements. Starting with a basic outline, every piece must be assembled in a coherent, rigorous, and creative manner to result in a course that is relevant and engaging for students.

This workshop will review the key elements to consider when designing a new course or revising an existing one. We will discuss how the course context, learning outcomes, assessment tools, and the selection of relevant resources influence course design decisions (e.g., drafting the syllabus, creating activities, choosing assessment strategies). Simple and relevant resources will also be provided to guide the design process.

• The analysis of the course context (course types, features, etc.)
• The learning outcomes
• The structure of the course (LO, content and timetable)
• The assessment tools that will be needed (overview)
• The inventory of resources related to the course (reading, video, others)
• The drafting of the course syllabus (Simple Syllabus... guide and information for access)
